If Burlington had a "best-kept secret" award, Aldershot would have a shelf of them. Tucked into the city's southwest corner between the Royal Botanical Gardens and the shores of Hamilton Harbour, it's the neighbourhood where you can walk to a GO train in the morning, paddle past herons after work, and still get a big backyard on a quiet, tree-lined street.

It's also one of Burlington's most interesting neighbourhoods to watch right now: established character homes on generous lots sit a few minutes from brand-new condos and townhomes going up along Plains Road. That mix creates opportunities for first-time buyers, downsizers and families — if you know where to look.

Aldershot at a Glance

The vibe Leafy, laid-back and nature-first, with a small-town main street that's quietly modernizing.

Main street Plains Road West — groceries, cafés, restaurants and everyday services.

Why People Love Living in Aldershot

1. Canada's largest botanical garden is basically your backyard

The Royal Botanical Gardens headquarters sits right on Plains Road West, and its gardens, marshes and forests wrap around Aldershot's western edge. We're talking roughly 27 km of trails, formal gardens like Hendrie Park, and wetlands where you'll spot turtles, swans and herons. A membership pays for itself fast when it's a five-minute drive.

2. LaSalle Park is the neighbourhood's summer living room

Down on the water, LaSalle Park has a marina, wooded trails, a splash pad, ball diamonds, a pavilion and some of the best sunset views of the harbour and the Skyway. Locals know it for the trumpeter swans that winter there — bring the kids (and a camera).

3. A commuter's dream — by train or by car

Aldershot GO sits on the Lakeshore West line with all-day service toward Union Station, and it's also a VIA Rail stop. Drivers get the 403, QEW and 407 within minutes, which is a big reason Aldershot appeals to people who work in Hamilton, Oakville or Toronto.

4. Space you can't find in newer subdivisions

Many of Aldershot's original homes were built after the Second World War on lots that would be split in two today. For buyers who want a garden, a pool or room to add on later, that land is the real value.

A Little Aldershot History

Before it was part of Burlington, Aldershot was a farming community in East Flamborough Township — by 1900 it was known as a leading fruit-growing area. The City of Burlington annexed it in 1958, and the orchards gradually gave way to the post-war homes you see today. That history is why so many streets feel mature and green: the trees had a head start.

Homes in Aldershot: What Your Money Buys

  • Character detached homes: bungalows, ranches and Cape Cods on larger lots — popular with renovators, downsizers and families planning a long stay.
  • Newer townhome enclaves: tucked-away clusters with attached garages, often a smart step up from a condo.
  • New condos & live/work towns on Plains Road: one of the more accessible ways into a Burlington address, with the GO and the waterfront nearby.
  • Waterfront & near-water properties: limited, special, and priced accordingly — these rarely sit long.
Coredell's Tip: In Aldershot, two homes on the same street can be worlds apart in value depending on lot depth, whether it backs onto green space, and how close it is to the rail corridor or Plains Road traffic. Before you fall in love with a listing photo, ask for the lot survey and walk the street at rush hour. I'll pull the recent sales for that exact pocket so you know what "fair" really looks like.

Schools in and Around Aldershot

Families in the area look at schools including Glenview, Maplehurst and King's Road public elementary schools, Holy Rosary Catholic Elementary, and Aldershot School for older students.

School boundaries change, and some schools cap enrolment. Always confirm the school for a specific address with the Halton District School Board or Halton Catholic District School Board before you firm up an offer — it's one of the first things I check for my buyers.

What to Know Before You Buy

  • Trains are part of life near the tracks. Great for commuting; check noise and vibration for homes close to the rail line.
  • Plains Road is changing. New mid-rise buildings bring shops and energy — and some construction. Ask what's approved near any home you're considering.
  • Older homes need a sharp inspection. Look closely at electrical, windows, basements and drainage. (My 12-step buyer guide walks through what to check.)

Aldershot FAQ

Is Aldershot a good place to live?

For people who want nature, easy GO access and more land for the money than many newer Burlington subdivisions, yes. It's quieter than downtown but close to everything — Hamilton, Waterdown and downtown Burlington are all short drives.

How far is Aldershot from Toronto?

Roughly 40 minutes by car outside rush hour, and more in peak traffic. Lakeshore West GO trains from Aldershot run to Union Station, which is how many locals commute.

Is Aldershot good for first-time buyers?

It can be. The new condos and townhomes along Plains Road are some of the more accessible ways into Burlington. Ask me for a list of current options in your budget.
